"In a sea of blogs I think I'm one of those bloggers who blogs what she actually wears. I don't set up photo shoots and plan what outfit will be going up the next week."
California born Apneet Kaur is currently a brooklyn based fashion blogger, and as Friday's finest, The Blogture has caught up with this busy and stylish lady as she shares with us a little more about her inspirations behind the Fabric Snob, along with some favorite summer tunes and hobbies. Age: 23
What was the inspiration behind Fabric Snob, and how did you come up with the name?
I started my blog on tumblr as a place to share photos and writing when I started getting published. From there I started posting photos once in a while, and people seemed to respond to that so I just kept with it. Eventually I moved to Blogspot, which is a more traditional (can I say that) platform for fashion blogging.
The name was somewhat of a joke my coworker and I came up with long before I had a blog. I worked as a buyer in a consignment shop and since I cared so much about what was on the care tags of clothing we were buying in I was dubbed the "fabric snob." Given my love for vintage, I always appreciate quality in fabrics, construction, and cuts.
What do you think sets your blog apart from all the rest?
In a sea of blogs I think I'm one of those bloggers who blogs what she actually wears. I don't set up photo shoots and plan what outfit will be going up the next week. My method is haphazard, but it works for me. I usually grab my tripod and camera before I get on the subway to go about my day, and photograph what I'm wearing that way.
I guess I'm also not afraid to be honest. But if my soul is dying because I'm hung over and am wearing the same clothes from the previous day and can't handle life I WILL ask you not to judge me, hehe. See exhibit A. Something that your readers don't know about you:
Hmm... I guess something my readers may not know about me is that I'm a music student and that's mostly how I spend my time, studying music and playing music. I started playing the flute at age 9, upright bass at 13, and bassoon (that was short-lived) at 15. I've also been singing all my life doing solo performances, and singing in big band and jazz combos. Today, I'm getting my degree in Music Performance with a concentration in Flute, though I started out as an Opera major.
Hobbies aside from blogging:
Reading, writing, taking photos, skateboarding, inching closer to getting my motorcycle license, playing with my puppy, drinking whiskey, thrifting, sending snapchats (I'm completely obsessed ATM), traveling, and collecting hats.
Most memorable moment in your blogging career has been:
Working with Refinery 29 (http://www.refinery29.com/mystylist/apneet-kaur)has been an amazing experience thus far, and I'm so happy to have my byline on a respected website. The opportunity sort of came t of the blue, as I was shocked the editors even knew about my humble little blog at all! Needless to say, I'm super jazzed about that right now.
Currently on you summer playlist:
Margot & the Nuclear So & So's, Ella Fitzgerald, The Rolling Stones, Fiona Apple, Joni Mitchell, The Dead Boys, Bruce Springsteen, Ambassadors, Filligar, and much more. I don't keep up with modern music as much as I should, but I'm a huge huge fan of Wagner.
If you could live in another era, when would it be and why?
I would say the 60's because of Anna Karina- she's my spirit animal. Another good one would be the 30's because of swing dance and swing music.
Up and coming for you and your blog:
I'll be releasing a zine soon with original photos and writing. Right now I'm working on a personal photo project called 'Boys of Summer,' (http://fabricsnob.tumblr.com/post/56158104682/yeezus-chri5t-boysofsummer)I basically approach boys in the street, tell them they're cute and ask for a portrait. Hehe!!
For my blog, a number of projects are in the works for the coming months. You'll just have to follow along to find out!
